Marmara Marble and Current Design Examples in the Context of Sustanability
Although the choice of building materials seems to be a problematic of the sub-scales, especially the finishing materials, is a visual tool that has cultural and psychological effects besides its physical properties. Natural stones add their identity to the building with their features such as place, culture, purpose/form beyond their physical performance characteristics and are effective on the perception of the user. In this study, first of all, Marmara marble, a local material used in Anatolia for a long time, will be evaluated on the basic dimensions of sustainability. Marmara marble with rich reserves in Turkey, is used in very important buildings in the World with its identical texture and color. Although the material has been widely used in certain typologies in the past, nowadays it has lost its popularity. Today, because of the economic and physical recession caused by the pandemic, the return from the global to the local and using of local resources are emphasized. In this period, using of local materials and resources in design will have positive results in socio-economic and cultural terms. The subject has been evaluated over the use of Marmara marble with a new form of cutting style in two contemporary buildings within the Vehbi Koç Foundation and in an important contemporary building in Europe recently. |
