Reading Early Republican Period City Parks through Belediyeler Dergisi (Municipalities Magazine)

The architecture of the Early Republican Period has an important place in the history of Turkish architecture in order to understand the establishment of a new state and how the changing life of the nation is reflected in architecture. With the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and the adoption of the republic as a form of government, many innovations were made and new public spaces needed by the Republic began to be built in the cities during this construction process. City parks, which reflect the ideology of the Republic, have an important place in the zoning plans created during this period. City parks have used for spending leisure time, resting, exercising and gathering as part of the new social life of the people. It is seen that the parks are designed as one of the secular public spaces of the cities, in some cities as municipal parks, in some cities as urban parks on a larger scale. The role of municipalities in the development of these parks is very important. In this context, the Belediyeler Dergisi (Municipalities Magazine), which started to be published in the Early Republican Period, is a very important source in terms of reflecting the ideas and perspective of the Republic of Turkey regarding public space. In this study, city parks, which are one of the important focal points of the city in the architecture of the Early Republican Period, were examined through the Belediyeler Dergisi, regarding their construction year, the planner, their relationship with the environment, landscape elements, monuments and structures.
