A Comparative Review on Housing Design through Traditional and Contemporary Housing Patterns
The housing and shelter pattern, contemporarily called as “housing design”, differs for each culture. However, when universally considered, even if the cultural codes that shape the housing vary, there can be many common points to consider for the design of housing patterns. In this study, these common points / criteria that can be seen as a reflection of the economic and environmental developments in the world are researched and determined. Criteria related to the design of the housing area, which is largely derived from Europe and the US, and obtained from comprehensive reports created by government agencies, city councils or non-governmental organizations with a participatory approach, are listed, compiled and simplified. With this point of view, accessibility, legibility, continuity and enclosure, diversity and variety, privacy, environmental sustainability and safety and security parameters have emerged as the criteria that can be used in creating and evaluating the housing area designs. In this context, within the scope of the study two different housing settlements in Eskişehir are examined with respect to the “housing area design criteria’. In this study; it is envisaged that the design criteria table could serve as a checklist for future studies. |
