Changing Consumption Understanding and Modernization Process in Shopping Malls

Along with the changing consumption habits throughout history, shopping venues have also changed, their forms, structural features, functions and locations have varied. Shopping malls, which are the most preferred consumption venues of today, have transformed over time and have created an innovative concept of space by incorporating entertainment, culture-art and sports areas. This situation meets an important need in big cities that are getting more crowded and whose social areas are running out. When we look at the past, we see that shopping venues are an important area for the society they are in and that they serve as a public space. These areas, which are in the center of the city, used to host many functions that the public needs other than shopping, such as gathering and communication. Today, there is no need for people to come together to communicate or socialize. Rapidly developing technological elements are eliminating the problem of reaching something/somewhere every day, and individuals are increasingly adopting a singular lifestyle within the crowded social structure. Actions such as gathering and coming together are decreasing every day. In this change, shopping malls have become a very important part of the consumption chain where some social activities such as eating and chatting, going to the cinema or the theatre can be carried out, in addition to being a place for shopping for the region where they are located. In today's conditions, there are also important changes in the design of shopping malls, whose meaning and form are constantly changing, different shopping malls emerge, and success is tried to be achieved in shopping malls with different business strategies. Within the scope of the study, shopping malls, which are seen as one of the most affected building types by today's conditions together with the concept of shopping and consumption, will be examined within the historical development process. This change they have experienced will be examined by reducing it to general usage areas, and the differences that occur in the production of these areas due to today's conditions will be explained through examples.
