Re-understanding the Tunalı Hilmi Street In the Context of Structure, Meaning and Identity
The aim of this study is to re-question the role of streets, which is one of the most important urban components such as buildings, squares and parks, in the context of the relationship between the user and the city. One of the main busiest streets of Ankara, the Tunalı Hilmi Street is located in Kavaklıdere District, which functions as a sub-center, and it is very close to the Kızılay central business district of Ankara wis chosen as the study area. The street is considered not only as a physical but also as a social formation. The structure, meaning and identity of the Tunalı Hilmi Street, which is one of the attraction centers of the city as a public place, was examined through surveys, interviews and observations. If the street is perceived by its own characteristics and differences, what is memorable about the street forms the identity of the street. In this way, the identity of the street is shaped by separating from the others. In this context, the participants are required to evaluate the positive-adequate and negative-inadequate physical characteristics of the street, the positive- adequate and negative-inadequate aspects of the environment/atmosphere. As a result of the analyzes, it is concluded that the Tunalı Hilmi Street has an identity, but some features need to be revised in order to be a more legible urban place and contribute to improve the quality of urban life. |
