Garden of the Roman House as a Splendid Place

 

The aim of this study is to examine the spatial formation of the garden of the Roman house from a historical and architectural perspective. Pompeii, was chosen as a site to analyze the gardens of the Roman house, which has a unique and well-preserved texture. The spatial formation of the gardens of the houses in Pompeii is tried to be understood through the daily life of the period and the design elements used. In this context, the garden of the Roman house was investigated under these headings; entrances, walkways, walls, water elements, plants, garden furniture, ornaments and lighting. In this study, the garden of Loreius Tiburtinius House, which is one of the most expressive examples of the Roman house garden, is examined as a magnificent outdoor place which establishes strong relations with the interior of the house (domus) and can exist with its own identity. In this context, the historical and architectural reading made for the garden of the Roman house by means of the design elements for the garden of Loreius Tiburtinius House. The outdoor place was utilized effectively by using the design elements in a rational and aesthetic manner so that a new qualified and defined living place has been created. In this way, inferences are made about the daily life and place organization about the garden of the Roman house.
