Sustainability in Urban Transformation: The Case of Trabzon Çömlekçi District
In urban transformation; it is possible for the transformation project to be a sustainable design that uses the current order in the most efficient way and does not harm the environment for the future and exhibits the most beneficial approach. There are many criteria in the evaluation for a sustainable city. In the application of these criteria, there is a certification system called LEED ND (Nearby Development) applied by LEED for cities. Trabzon has been an important city throughout history due to being a port city. The name of the port and its surroundings in the city of Trabzon located in the Black Sea is Çömlekçi Mahallesi today. Çömlekçi Mahallesi, which is an important center with its historical past and cultural richness and shapes the silhouette of old Trabzon, has differentiated and changed over the years and reached its current appearance. It is thought that the current state of Çömlekçi Mahallesi will not meet the needs of the city. For this reason, there is a project planned to be implemented for the transformation of the neighborhood. In this study, Çömlekçi Mahallesi will be examined based on the LEED ND certification system criteria of the LEED certification system, which is widely used worldwide, using the photographs and other data obtained. There are five main headings in the LEED ND certification system. Çömlekçi neighborhood was evaluated based on the sub-criteria in the first two headings, Smart Location and Connection, and Neighborhood Model and Design, and other headings were excluded from the scope due to lack of sufficient data. The positive and negative changes in Çömlekçi neighborhood over the years in terms of sustainability were revealed through the discussed headings, and the environmental gains of the newly planned project for this neighborhood were revealed. Within the scope of this study, the evaluation of the Trabzon Çömlekçi Urban Transformation area is expected to shed light on urban transformations to be carried out in cities with sloping land structures such as Trabzon. |
