An Analysis of Professional Terminology Confusion in Design

Professional terminology is essential for both the production and presentation of specialized knowledge within the profession and for effective and specific internal communication of both the education process and the practice-based expert sharing. Problems experienced in professional terminology lead to differences in meaning (purpose) and wording (expression), failure to establish the intended discussion axis, and endless discussions on issues that are not agreed upon in terms of meaning. The study questions some expressions used in design processes in terms of content, scope and internal relations, and aims to prepare the ground for valuable discussions on the subject in the future. In this sense, expressions such as concepts, notions, ideas, thoughts, understandings and approaches used in design processes will be explained with examples in the context of design.
