Importance of Visual Thinking İn Landscape Architecture Design Education

Designing action occurs depending on the needs in the life cycle. The need for creation can be met by human beings, analysis and creativity. Creativity need is an act of imagination and decision-making, and is a person-specific phenomenon. Meeting the needs in the design process is related to the designer's involvement in the process, some concepts in the direction of authenticity, creative and aesthetic concerns. The object, thought or phenomenon to be designed as a result of this original attitude emerges as a new product, re-interpreted from the beginning. At the end of the design process, the relationship between visual thinking and visual expression is of great importance in creating creative and original products. This bilateral relationship is essential for any kind of analysis at every stage of the holistic process and is also very important in design education. In design education, principles and elements that students can use in preparing student design are taught. When the student reaches the capacity to audit these design cases, he can make conscious studies using his / her creativity potential, intelligence and knowledge. Evidence of the formation of visual thought can be made clear by the ability of the student to do what he or she intended, and to understand the structure as it is thought of by others. For this reason, 63 students (4th grade) who received design education in the Department of Landscape Architecture of the Technical University of Karadeniz were surveyed. The students' opinions about visual thinking and the effects of visual thinking on education, relations with visual expression techniques were investigated. At the end of the study; It was determined that students began to visualize visual imagery, that visual thinking was necessary for design education, that it developed its creativity and that these ideas could be best explained through sketching.
