Evaluation of the Library Interior in the Context of Universal Design Principles: Gedik Ahmet Paşa Public Library
This study aims to evaluate the Gedik Ahmet Paşa Public Library in the city center of Afyonkarahisar using the universal design approach. The theoretical framework of the study is based on the position of universal design in the context of human rights; in terms of application, a structural analysis was carried out based on indicators developed in line with the Seven Principles of Universal Design (equal use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, error tolerance, low physical effort, and appropriate size and space for approach and use). The data collection process was carried out through on-site observation and basic measurements; the data obtained was supported by photographs and rated as “appropriate,” “partially appropriate,” and “inappropriate” for each principle. The findings show that the library performs particularly well in terms of physical access and service point accessibility. However, within the scope of the principles of perceptible information and error tolerance, the fact that information relies heavily on visual channels, the limited level of audio and tactile support, readability issues in signage, and arrangements at some circulation points that could pose a risk of tripping or collision were identified as areas for improvement. In conclusion, the study points to the need to evaluate universal design performance in library structures in line with an approach that holistically addresses physical accessibility criteria, multi-sensory information, safe circulation, and user experience. |
