Analysis of Urban Residential Areas by Space Syntax Method: The Case of Diyarbakır Yenişehir Region

In the historical process, urban spaces have been shaped depending on socio-cultural, geographical, economic and political variables. These variables have been effective in the shaping and change of urban areas according to the conditions of the period. Accordingly, an answer to the question of which variables affect urban space should be sought through urban space analysis. For this purpose, Diyarbakır urban area, which continues its development starting from a historical core, was selected as the study area. The city, which continues its development starting from a historical settlement surrounded by city walls, has realised its exit from the city walls with the planning of the Yenişehir region and has continued its development over time. The fact that it is neighbouring the historical city walls and that its development has been directed by 3 different plans until today has been effective in the selection of Yenişehir region as the study area. In this direction, the urban development of the area was examined in the study and the 1937, 1965 and 1985 zoning plans prepared for the area were evaluated and the development of the area was analysed with the spatial sequence method through the zoning plans. H-H integration and connectivity analyses for the plan periods and the intelligibility and synergy analyses of the area were examined and compared. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the settlement was isolated, integrated and the core of the settlement, the road network hierarchy and the perceptibility of the settlement changed. It is concluded that the changes in the zoning plans and the decisions taken in the selection of functional land use are the main reasons for the change in the street network structure and characteristics of the urban space.
