Preservation and Assessment of Mut Mountain Mosque within Rural Architecture
The land of Anatolia had hosted a cultural heritage of numerous civilisations. Such cultural heritage is not limited to the monumental and civil structures throughout the urban residential spaces alone. At the same time, traditional houses and other structures built by the local people also establish the vernacular architecture and cultural heritage of the country. Vernacular architecture means unpretentious and simple structures built using social, cultural and economic values and shaped by the interaction between topography, climate and vegetation cover. These products having a natural style have been manufactured using the wise solutions of their locations. They have ben constructed on square or rectangular bases using materials such as stones, soil, bricks and wood. Rural architectural elements bearing a multi-layered and multi-cultural structure in Anatolia, have reached to our day not only through physical means but also through social and architectural life. However, such structures have faced destruction in the rural areas that have been evacuated due to reasons such as change of location, migration, and Acts of God. The objective of this study is the preservation of Mountain Mosque within the Province of Mersin, District of Mut and carrying the same into the future. In this context, documentation of the mosque has been left on its own in the rural land as a result of change of location has been provided, and suggestions have been presented for availing an interaction between the mosque and its surrounding traditional fabric, monumental structures and archeologic areas. |
