Investigation of Structural Damage Results Caused by the February 6, 2023 7.7 and 7.6 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Çukurova District of Adana Province

 

According to the data of the Disaster and Emergency Presidency (AFAD) on February 6, 2023, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 centered in Kahramanmaraş (Pazarcık) occurred at 04:17 local time. Approximately 9 hours after this earthquake, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 centered in Kahramanmaraş (Elbistan) occurred at 13:24 local time. These two earthquakes, which were severe and destructive, caused many structures to collapse and collapse, especially in Kahramanmaraş, with its epicenter in Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Elazığ, Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Osmaniye and Adana. In this study, the effects of the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on structures in the Çukurova District of Adana Province were examined. As a result of damage assessment studies, all buildings in the district were examined on-site and buildings with minor damage, moderate damage and severe damage were identified. In addition, buildings identified as severely damaged as a result of damage assessment studies were examined within the scope of this study in terms of construction year, number of floors and construction systems.
