Investigation the Usage Field of Polymer Materials in Architecture

Various materials such as carrier, coating and decorative are used in the construction of buildings. These materials are important to meet human shelter needs. Developments in the social structure gradually increase the need for building materials. In meeting these needs, the design and engineering properties of materials are formulated to meet new needs. Improving the design and engineering properties of materials affects the architecture and strength of buildings. Additionally, the emergence of new technologies such as digital production, 3D printing, augmented reality, and nanotechnology technology not only improves the design and application processes of buildings, but also contributes to the production of new solutions for the construction of buildings. These technologies are used not only in modern buildings but also in the restoration of historical buildings. With developing technologies, new materials with similar properties are developed for the restoration of the materials used in the construction of historical buildings, ensuring the preservation of the original values of historical buildings. Polymer materials, one of the developments in the field of materials science, have expanded their use in the field of architecture, as they increase the properties and functions of building materials. Polymer materials are preferred in the field of architecture due to their high mechanical resistance, resistance to high temperatures, and ability to be effective against water and moisture compared to traditional materials (such as stone, brick, wood and adobe). In this study, is aimed to examine the recent progress in the use of polymer materials in architecture. Moreover, has been tried to explain the uses of polymer materials in today's and historical buildings and the benefits they provide compared to traditional materials. In the study, the usage areas of polymer materials in architecture are examined; literature search was conducted. As a result of the literature review, was determined that polymer materials are used to protect buildings and provide aesthetic appearances due to their fire resistance, waterproof feature, high strength, and effective resistance to corrosion and weather conditions. It has also been concluded that polymer materials help architects and engineers in the design of buildings due to their high performance and process ability.
