Analysis of the Architectural Education Process in an Earthquake Country
Architecture is a profession that directly affects human life, shapes the built environment and organizes living spaces. However, all kinds of practices and actions related to urban and daily life that can exist in a spatial context can only be realized within the framework drawn by the discipline of architecture. The educational dimension of a profession that has such an impact on the city and human life is also of great importance. In the field of architecture, where no major changes have been seen in its conditions (durability, aesthetics, functionality) since Vitruvius, the issue of safety and durability of structures has become a topic of discussion again with the earthquake disasters experienced in Turkey recently. The serious damages and losses in the building stock after the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes have revealed the need for Turkey to take very serious steps in earthquake architecture. When architectural design errors and damaged structures after the earthquake are examined, they are seen as the primary reasons for the loss of life and property. In this context, the research conducted examines the extent to which earthquake-resistant architectural design education is included in architecture schools in Turkey. In addition, it examines how and to what extent this issue should be included in architectural education in the literature and makes a comparison with similar disadvantaged countries in terms of earthquakes. As a result, it emphasizes the prominent negativities in this regard in Turkey and makes suggestions regarding the arrangements and improvements that should be made in architectural education regarding earthquake-resistant architectural design education. |
