Sustainability in City Furniture Design: The Case of Baku

The effects of urban furnitures are evaluated in terms of supporting urban life and sustainability, and innovative solutions with environmental sensitivity are included in this direction. It can be said that the applications are mostly in developed countries but importance is given to the subject in line with the sustainability targets in developing countries. In this context, in this study, the basic criteria to be considered in the design of urban furniture that contribute to sustainability are investigated and the quality of the examples in the developing Azerbaijan’s city of Baku is examined. Within the scope of on-site analysis of urban furniture and interviews with design office employees, it is seen that sustainability is given importance in urban furniture design in Baku, designs provide important gains for the country, but there are obstacles related to economic conditions in the diversification of applications, and social awareness is considered as a solution to overcome these obstacles. In this context, it is thought that the research can be a guide for studies aiming at the development of sustainable urban furniture by expressing the design and application alternatives, the problems that may be encountered in the process and the predictions for the solution.
