Three Modern Heritages that Could Not be Preserved: The Ostim, Batıkent and Oto Sanayi Sitesi Mosques
When we focus on mosque architecture in the historical process, it is seen that architects in Turkey started to be involved in mosque project designs, albeit rarely, after the 1980s, and conservative traditional mosque examples began to be replaced by contemporary examples blended with the context of architects. Architect Kaya Gönençen is among the brave architects who presented the first examples of these modern mosque interpretations. In this study, three mosques in Ankara [Ostim Mosque, Oto Sanayi Sitesi Mosque (currently Ahi Evran Mosque) and Batıkent Central Mosque], which he designed and implemented, along with the architect's design approach, and the interventions to the buildings during the construction and usage process are discussed in this article. As a method in the study, interviews were held with the architect to understand the design-construction-use process, and the interventions in the usage process were tried to be obtained through on-site observations and inquiries (administration and user). As a result; the main difficulties encountered in the continuation of these three works as a modern heritage, such as the fact that the sizes envisaged for the buildings during the design phase could not meet the increasing number of users over time, and the additions made as a result, on the other hand, the fact that some design interpretations of the architect could not be adopted by the user were seen as the main difficulties. |
