The Effect of Structural Artist Felix Candela's Innovative Perspective on Curved Forms on Architecture

In this research, the use of curved form in architectural buildings were discussed. Curved form started to be designed more frequently in with the works of Felix Candela in the 1950s and this study examined Felix Candela and his designs relationship with the designers who are most famous in today's architecture-engineering discipline. The use of curved forms in the architecture of Santiago Calatrava and Zaha Hadid were investigated with Candela, who built the most important example of the experimental structure and form. In this study, first of all, Candela's works were explored. Afterward, the use of curved forms in the works of Santiago Calatrava (Candela's student and later business partner) and Zaha Hadid (designed a hyperbolic paraboloid pavilion to emphasize Candela) were examined. In the study, two qualitative research methods were used; (1) case study and (2) correlational research. Curved forms were used as a design composition, apart from crossing the wide openings after Candela. As a result of this study, the structural design approaches of Calatrava and Hadid and the use of sculptural curved forms have noticed the influence of Candela. Architectural design is a process that follows the ideas of previous architects, sometimes receiving a verdict and sometimes leading to complete rejection, but the interaction never ends completely.
