An Evaluation on Former Elazığ Government Office’s Excavation-Project-Application and Functionalization

 

Former Governmental Office of Elazığis located at Elazığ’s Downtown, Çarşı Quarter. The building which is one of the early examples of National Architecture style is consisted of three floor, as one half-basement and two floors upstairs. The building has a rectangular plan sweeping east-west direction. The Government Office was built by Enis Paşa, then Governor of Elazığ in the year 1896. It has been used for various purposes from the built date until the year 2022 uninterrupted. Both from layout and frontal view aspects, the building has completely been designed as symmetric. In the middle of the building, north and south entrance sections of the ground floor intersect with the same width east-west corridor extending across the building. Rectangular spaces spreading two sides of the corridor in the direction of north and south direction in the ground floor are in the same layout design with the same axle. Upper floor has similar architectural planning with the ground floor. South and north fronts of the building are quite brisk with their space/fullness proportion, horizontal and vertical echelon of windows, entablature system and cantilevers. Side fronts on the west and east are plainer then front and back facades. As for material, adobe, ashlar, brick, rubblestone, metal and wood are used in the construction. Former Governmental Office of Elazığis a building where important tasks had been fulfilled in the past and had hosted officials besides being significant from architectural aspect. Renovation of the building was done by Government’s Housing and Development Administration between years 2007 and 2009. The building which was used for many social and cultural purposes between the 2009 and the 2022, has been serving as Elazığ Govermental Office.
