Historical Kabatas Neighborhood Central Mosque and its Changes in the Process
Mosques, which used to be big masjids where only Friday prayers were held, became a center where Muslims learned about social, cultural and even political issues. The mosque, located in Kabataş Neighborhood of Çaykara district of Trabzon city, was built in 1811. The mosque has been used as a center for the aforementioned issues from the first day until recently. With its hand-drawn ornaments, wood carving ornaments, geometric ornaments, architectural descriptions, the mosque is among the structures that most reflect the stylistic features of the Westernization Period among the mosques in and around Çaykara. Within the scope of the study, the structural changes of the mosque, which was protected by the General Directorate of Foundations and restored in 2015, and which has been the subject of various sources in terms of art history from different perspectives, will be mentioned, and its plan, material and ornamental features will be examined. This study, which is a qualitative research using on-site examination, photography, literature review, and interview with local people, is important in terms of setting an example for the preservation and restoration of similar mosques in rural areas. |
