Cappadocia Region - Rule-Based Analysis of Uchisar Houses

 

Uçhisar Town is one of the prominent settlements of the Cappadocia region with its rock-carved settlements, underground cities, masonry stone structures and its local architecture integrated with natural formations. The town of Uçhisar was determined as the study area due to the advantage of the topography, the easy workability of the tuff layer and the variety of structures formed by the effect of the slope. Traditional and new urban texture are together in Uçhisar. New housing designs in Uçhisar are made without considering the traditional architectural texture of the region. These buildings do not comply with traditional urban architecture in terms of plan type, construction technique, materials, and facade character. Two different types of houses in Uçhisar were analyzed using the shape grammar method, which is a rule-based analysis method. With this study, it is aimed to solve the formation rules of the traditional residential architecture of Uçhisar. With the data obtained from the shape grammar study, it is aimed to create a base for the new designs made in the Uçhisar region. In addition, with this study; the rules in the construction of the traditional urban texture will be determined and data will be created for the new urban textures.
