Conversion of Cultural Heritage Educational Building (1908-2021) and A Restoration Proposal: From “Sultanî of Samsun” to “Maturation Institude”
The preservation of cultural heritage structures and their transmission to future generations is one of the most important factors that strengthen the communication and bond between periods. Although not as common as monumental buildings, industrial buildings and residences, “educational buildings” are among the exampli of cultural heritage that should be preserved. In this study, the conversion of the Sultanî of Samsun, which is one of the important historical educational buildings of Samsun and which was previously used as a hospital, headquarters, dormitory, high school and maturation institute, is discussed. Since the building was used as Samsun Atatürk Anatolian High School for a long time, it is also known by this name by the local people. As it is one of the few educational buildings that were built in the city centre at the beginning of the 20th century and have survived to the present day, examining its transformations is expected to provide insights about urban memory and preservation culture. As a result of the research and examinations made on the subject, interventions to the original architectural features of the building during the transformation process were determined, and these interventions and their latest functions were evaluated. However, it was found out that the restoration Project which was aimed to bring the building to its original architectural features was not implemented during the last functionalization. Therefore, with this study, it was concluded that the building, which operates for educational purposes and maintains its continuity in the cultural and economic context, can be an example for cultural heritage protection once the restoration project is implemented. |
