Comparative Analysis of the Architectural Characteristics of Borusan Music House before and After the Refunctioning Process
This study is focused on the comparative analysis of the architectural characteristics of Borusan Music House before and after the refunctioning process. Borusan Music House is located on İstiklal Avenue in Beyoğlu Municipality of İstanbul. Spatial characteristics, elevation features, structural system, material and lighting systems are selected as the comparative analysis criteria. It was documented that the original version of the building was built as a residential apartment building in the second half of 1870’s after the great Pera fire. The building now serves as a music workshop and a performance arts center. The refunctioning process included the preservation and renovation of the front facade, reconstruction of the side façade, remaining faithful to its original, and complete reconstruction of the interior portion of the building. Comparative analyses revealed that while the front facade is in its original form, there were changes in the detailing level; spatial layout of the building evolved from a fractioned one to a more integrated space; the structural system was completely changed to a composite steel and reinforced concrete frame except for the front facade; the use of materials and lighting system has been thoroughly updated according to the technological standards of the 21st century and the requirements of the new building function. |
