Transformation of Information with Productive Geometric Approaches in the Architectural Design Process
The architectural design process is a complex process that obtains information from many databases. One of the methods used in the analysis of this complex system is the approaches that consider design as an information processing process. These approaches provide advantages in terms of shaping and developing the design. In this study, it is aimed to determine the design processes that can occur by using different fields of knowledge and thinking styles together in the design process. For this reason, this research has been conducted especially with architectural students who have difficulties in shaping or developing the design. By observing the design processes of the students, it has been aimed to determine how they transform the information in their mental libraries into concrete products and how they use geometry in this process. For this purpose, the process of developing the design by simultaneously using the declarative knowledge that use the design as initial data along with the procedural knowledge that are effective in shaping the design has been examined. The data groups that direct the design are the data groups that are effective in the design of the building such as function, physical environment and social environment. As the procedural knowledge, two productive geometric systems, which are developed under the influence of the complexity of nature, are used: fractal and voronoi. With an algorithmic perspective, by dividing the design process into steps, it is aimed to determine the change in the transformation of knowledge in line with these two active knowledge areas. By observing the steps taken by the students, a design process observation chart that explains how their designs are shaped has been developed. In conclusion, it was determined that the students who used the two data groups together both included their environment in the design and found more creative solutions in the design development process. |
